——-Updated review at a the bottom!—————I’ve always purchased Catalyst cases for my phone and with this new iteration and upgrade, I no doubt bought this, and to my surprise not only is it the fantastic quality I expect from catalyst, but compared to prior versions for older phones, there are design improvements! I’ll generalize how these cases are though for those unfamiliar, and no doubt I will upgrade this review if this case has failed to meet my expectations, both for this company and just in general in regards to some specific aspect.These cases have a soft rubber covering the main plastic part that holds the phone, which helps grip support, which is fantastic as always. The mute button is activated with a screw style wheel on the side, allowing for waterproofing but still easy activation when necessary. Prior iterations required a bit of a pinch to be able to grip the wheel to turn but pleasantly it appears they’ve made it bigger and now it’s completely hassle free to turn. The front screen protector is completely responsive thanks to two little nubs on the back case that hold the phone forward; unlike many cases where you have unresponsiveness, this phone doesn’t suffer from it. Prior iterations had you sacrifice screen quality with a measure of grain, but fortunately it seems they’ve gotten rid of this completely and my screen looks as HD as if I were holding the phone myself! One other thing I’ve noticed is that the plastic latches which hold the back part of the case to the front, have been made a LOT more sturdy. Case is difficult to open, but that’s a good thing. The bottom grille maintains it’s waterproofing using a rubber plug, which unfortunately would sometimes slip due to it being held in place by sliding a small section of the plug under a tiny slit in the hard plastic of the case. Now, the hard plastic instead actively holds the rubber plug with a clip, and the plug as always has three grooves to guarantee pressure should your phone take a hit underwater to the rubber. The speakers are completely covered by a thin film, and pretty well encased in the case so they don’t tear easily due to any water current/pressure/dirt flying at them. Thankfully as well, due to this, the film can have a slight bit of tension, and inside the case, with foam to surround the speakers, you don’t have warble at high noise levels and the sound quality is superb. The camera bump specifically encloses every lens without affecting quality, however most importantly the flash and lidar sensor are covered with some foam inside the case, and protected by flexible plastic film so as to avoid any reflection of light/lidar inside the case as you record, which I thought was a nice touch. Lidar works fine as always.After this wonderful review you might be asking, any downsides? I’d say no because this is a pretty simple thing to get right and to perfect, a waterproof case to protect, but there is one thing I dislike: prior versions of catalyst cases, on the soft rubber part of the phone, they had tiny little nubs at all four corners which helped keep your phone still on slippery surfaces. They removed that now as the soft rubber is more so on the sides and no longer has as much reach on the back. Not an issue because the camera bump is fully protected by the case, but was a nice feature to have when you put your phone down. As for mic quality, I will edit this comment once I’ve had a chance to see how well it sounds, but to an avid user of his phone and a couple nature trails and beaches, this already is the best waterproof case on the market for iPhones.————Update————-After a while of using, I can note three different significant issues. One, the screen has developed rainbow circles, which you can’t see unless the oled screen goes black. It can be temporarily resolved by lightly squeezing the case. Two, the frosted back makes adhesion to your hand difficult, and reduces grip on the phone. This paired along with the very smooth (but slippery) rubber used for the plug gasket makes it difficult to hold the phone in one hand, for the people who were/are capable of doing so. Lastly, the volume buttons require a significant amount of force to press. On the upside however, microphone and again speaker quality, are the best I’ve ever seen in a waterproof case. It’s very close to native, with only small muffling on mic.
